Sustainable Projects Take Center Stage With the New Winners of the LG Ambassador Challenge

LG captures lightning in a bottle once again as it recently concluded its LG Ambassador Challenge, which saw dozens of project proposals from across the nation. The contest was first introduced in partnership with Korea Food for the Hungry International (KFHI) and serves as a testament to LG’s dedication towards fostering sustainable development within the Philippines’ local communities. For its second year, the winning proposals are ‘Life is Good, When Life Has Light’, ‘Flowing Water for Growing Future’, and ‘Paliparan Community Livelihood’.

‘Life is Good, When Life Has Light’ is a program spearheaded by the Our Daily Bread Community-Dayap Church. The community, based in Calauan, Laguna, is a relocation site provided by the government after typhoon Ondoy. In the barangay, streetlights are practically absent, which makes it a dangerous place come night time, both for pedestrians and drivers alike. To address the problem, solar-powered street lights will be established throughout the dark places inside the relocation area. This goal will help people feel safe, reduce crime, conserve energy, make streets clearly visible in order to promote safety and convenience, and to have safer, comfortable, more convenient, and more efficient movement of vehicles during nighttime.

Another winning proposal is ‘Flowing Water for Growing Future’ by Myla Cabaluna. The project tackles water access in the community of Lawaguin. Because of the lack of an efficient water supply, locals have to resort to washing clothes and dishes, and even bathing by the road. To address the situation, the initiative plans on installing a solar-powered water pump that will deliver a clean and consistent water supply to the community.

The third winner for this year’s LG Ambassador Challenge is the Paliparan Community Livelihood Project by Bong Rho Yoon. The proposal aims to alleviate the livelihood of the community living in Paliparan, a dense barangay of over 100,000 people, most of which are urban poor. There are approximately 1,000 families living in the area with over 50% of the households’ main income coming from construction work. To help alleviate their situation, the livelihood project aims to introduce sewing to add job diversification. The vocational training education hopes to increase employment and add a stable source of income for households.

LG Philippines Managing Director Mr. Sungjae Kim was impressed with the proposed programs of this year’s crop of winners. “We at LG are proud to be a part of these helpful and inventive initiatives. Our brand is always committed to sustainability and leaving a positive impact in the community. These programs, spearheaded by our LG Ambassador Challenge winners, offer great strides to deliver sustainable growth to local communities. We stand hand in hand withthem to help realize their vision.”

Also present during the awarding ceremonies were Mr. Soonchang Hong, Minister and Consul General of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Mr. Taeho Lee, Country Manager of the Korea Food for the Hungry International (KFHI). KFHI is the international cooperation organization working to build international solidarity between Koreans and people around the world.
